Key responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients to facilitate the marketing, sale and training of the Liberty brand and products.
  • Manage the portfolio to ensure growth and retention.
  • Target new business and renewal of business in line with Liberty’s quality selection and adequate pricing guidelines.
  • Execute selling and negotiation strategies to ensure profitability of assigned Surety product lines.
  • Ensuring brokers/clients receive a high level of service that differentiates Liberty from its competitors.
  • Communicating with other product line Underwriters in order to leverage cross-selling opportunities and deliver a complete service to brokers and clients.
  • Ensuring premium payments are received and discrepancies investigated in a timely manner.
  • Providing input into product development and marketing plans including market research, competitor analysis, product design and geographic/segment focus.
  • Review and negotiate bond and indemnity terms and conditions including assisting with the production of manuscript bond wordings and endorsements.
  • Representing Liberty at industry social events, conferences and other relevant market related presentations.
  • Compile and present training to brokers and industry stakeholders.
  • Strengthening the Liberty Brand and own profile within the market to develop strategic relationships.
  • Work closely with claims and all other key internal stakeholders to promote Liberty’s “integrated business unit approach” and ensure seamless delivery of underwriting services.
  • Ensuring compliance with all legal, statutory and corporate affairs requirements on a timely basis.

Qualifications and Soft Skills

  • Tertiary qualifications essential, a discipline in Commerce or Finance is desirable.
  • Significant previous relevant experience in the Surety industry and in an aligned role preferably within an insurance company.
  • Strong Technical Underwriting skills.
  • Proven ability to manage a successful portfolio and ability to shape the business model and philosophy.
  • Advanced relationship building skills as well as excellent verbal, written communications and presentation skills.
  • Strong selling and negotiation skills and an advanced ability to drive for results and focus on outcomes.
  • Ability to work independently and autonomously.

Liberty Specialty Markets is recruiting for an Underwriter to join our expanding Professional and Financial Risks (PFR) team in our  Melbourne office. We are looking for someone who wants to make a positive contribution to our team, and who believes in and thrives on collaboration. Key responsibilities

  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with the broker community;
  • Providing a high level of underwriting service to brokers that will differentiate Liberty from other competitors;
  • Reviewing, rating and underwriting new business and renewal business by reviewing and negotiating policy terms/conditions including manuscript wording;
  • Fostering cross marketing opportunities and working closely with internal departments to deliver a complete service;
  • Liaising closely with other product line underwriters, and claims teams in order to provide top level customer service;
  • Participating in audits as required;
  • Contributing to an effective team environment by interacting professionally with all team members and providing development, support and assistance as required.

About you

  • A minimum of 5 years financial lines related products underwriting experience in similar or related classes of business, with a background in SME, Financial Institutions and/or Directors & Officers Liability preferred.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated experience of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures and techniques, including, but not limited to coverage issues, product lines, marketing, computers and product competition within the marketplace.
  • Highly proficient relationship building skills.
  • Strong teamwork philosophy and capability – within own team and across the organisation.
  • Strong verbal and written communications and organisational skills.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical and decision making skills.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Insurance, Business or Finance or related discipline desirable.

Key responsibilities

  • Works with minimal supervision, pro-actively handles a book of specialty lines claims, throughout the entire claim life cycle.
  • Conducts investigations, recommending adequate reserves, monitoring, documenting, and settling/closing claims in an expeditious and economical manner within prescribed authority limits for the line of business.
  • Interpreting policy coverage and determining if coverage applies to claims submitted.
  • Managing and adjusting all incoming insurance claims for relevant business line, delegating administrative/ processing tasks to the Technical Assistant Pool where appropriate.
  • Establishing and setting reserves for indemnity and expense claims, reviewing reserves on a regular basis to ensure adequacy.
  • Authorizing payments in accordance with internal processes and within scope of authority, settling claims as expeditiously and economically as possible.
  • Ensuring that internal and external stakeholders and Liberty clients consistently receive a high level of claims service that differentiates Liberty from its competitors. Managing the overall quality and performance of external service providers. 
  • Actively pursuing all avenues of recovery including, but not limited to timely subrogation activities.  Preparing files for suit, trial or subrogation where necessary.
  • Participating directly in mediation/ arbitration meetings and actively participating in settlement discussions.
  • Providing information to management on the existence or development of critical losses and advising relevant trends within the portfolio.
  • Working closely with other business lines in raising the Liberty profile and assisting in account retention and new business opportunities.
  • Working closely with the underwriting department to promote Liberty’s “integrated business unit approach” and ensure seamless delivery of underwriting and claims management services.
  • Identifying suspicious or potentially fraudulent claims, arranging investigation and briefing senior managers if further action is recommended.

Qualifications and Soft Skills

  • Significant previous claims management experience in the Insurance or Legal industry essential.
  • Sound knowledge of the Insurance Contracts Act and demonstrated ability to understand and apply legal principles to the management of claims.
  • Excellent working knowledge of PC based systems and applications such as Outlook, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and database systems for managing contacts, schedules and calendars is required.
  • Tertiary qualifications in a related discipline would be desirable. HSC (or equivalent) essential.
  • High level of attention to details and efficient time management skills.
  • Highly proficient relationship building skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills with sound business acumen abilities.
  • Has influencing skills and commercially aware negotiation skills.
  • Highly developed decision making skills and strong presentation skills.
